| Post subject: | masking a plastic Gibson style rosette |
Hi all. Thanks as usual for help past, present and hopefully future. I'm trying to mask my rosette before trying a burst. Tried cutting thin vinyl masking tape even thinner but not getting that close and would be worried about scraping. Burst will be in sprayed shellac if it makes any difference. Wondering how the factories do it too? Any help appreciated, Mike |

Don't know how factories do it, but I have always sealed the rosette with several coats of clear, sprayed my tints, sealed with a coat or clear and scraped the rosette clean. Tedious, but works. You have drop filling to do on the build coats after...

I've contemplated this a number of times. At Larrivee we masked the rosette with very thin masking tape, available at auto body suppliers for detailing work. It's out there somewhere, thin enough for rosette rings. To me it seems quite plausible to make a plug that drops into the soundhole that could hold an adjustable arm with the right size scraper for the rings, much like we always recommend to folks who lose a rosette ring and need to recut it. |

Yeah. That's basically what I tried. I had quarter inch stuff and cut it thinner. Really hard to mask accurately. I thought about a little scraper holder which would run along the inside of the sound hole but I've also bound the sound hole and I suspect the accuracy of my pretty rubbish dremel jig would mean haans ' technique of doing it by hand and eye would likely yield better results. I think I'll use the masking tape and then clean up with razor blade. |

There is a 3M product that autobody shops use. Don't know the exact product name but it might be Fineline. I have it in 1/8" and I'm pretty sure I've had it down to 1/16"th. It's a blue vinyl. You will get less bleed and what you do get can be taken care of with Haans's method. I get it from a auto parts store. |

I just did this on a rebuild of a smashed 1933 L-00. Here is the tape I used: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruby1638/15791831128/in/set-72157646344222304 It comes in various widths and is fairly expensive. With a little practice, you can do a great job. Ed |

I just took clear packing tape and laid it over sound hole pressed it around the rosette firmly then with a new sharp razor knife I cut gently around the inside and out side and removed excess . worked like a charm |
